Throughout Covid, Martlets has been a central hub for distribution of PPE to hospices throughout Sussex, using space at its Warehouse in Hove to store these vital stocks. Steve Perrin was a warehouse volunteer but last year when shops closed, this new role emerged.

“I am currently volunteering on the PPE distribution hub here at Martlets, and previously I have volunteered sorting CDs, DVDs and books in the warehouse. I’ve been volunteering here in total about three or four years now.

Prior to that I was a chartered accountant and I worked for American Express for 15 years and before that I worked in financial services in London.”

Why I support Martlets

“My father passed away at Martlets and my mother is currently being cared for by Martlets so it has meaning to me. And selfishly I needed something to do – I retired at 58 and I couldn’t just sit around and watch Netflix all day!

I love working with the people here, they’re so friendly and it’s like having a job that you look forward to going into every morning. I really enjoy my roles here.

We’ve been sorting the PPE throughout the Covid pandemic and I’ve felt like I’ve been doing my bit to help out throughout this.

I am proud to be a Martlets volunteer because it means so much to the city and the people of Brighton and Hove. It’s like a badge of honour to volunteer here – well I think so.”
