Counselling

We shape your care around what you need. Many people simply want someone to talk to who understands them. Others may want more in-depth psychological support.

Whatever your needs, our counsellors can offer support and guidance. We also offer special care and support for children too.

Bereavement support

Our bereavement service offers support to the family and friends of patients who have received care from Martlets – whether that’s on our inpatient ward or out in the community. Our expert team of counsellors and trained volunteers will do their best to support your individual needs. We provide both one-off and ongoing sessions.

Spiritual support

We welcome people of all faiths and beliefs at Martlets. Our chaplain is available to speak with patients who need a listening ear, spiritual advice, religious guidance, or wish to explore what is meaningful to them.

Our Chaplain is available to call you or visit you at home and is also available on our inpatient ward. If you’d like to speak with your own faith leader while you’re staying at the hospice, we’re happy to arrange this too.

Social work support

Our social work team are here to consider many different support needs with you. They will meet with you on and look at how they can help you with practical issues around terminal illness.

This can be a variety of things, such as:

  • Complex emotional support such as coming to terms with your illness and its impact, particularly when there is a recent diagnosis or rapid deterioration.
  • Advice and information about how to support children, how to talk with them about what is happening to you and address fears or worries as well as planning (practically and emotionally) for the future.
  • Offering advice and signposting for wills, funerals, accessing care services and lasting powers of attorneys.

We work with the whole family and friends’ network to understand everything we need to do to support you. We can provide support digitally, over the phone or face-to-face at our hospice or in your own home. All the support offered is tailored around you and what you need.

Respite

In some circumstances we offer a respite service, which supports carers and families who are caring for their loved ones. Our experienced carers can look after your loved one to give you a bit of time back.

Your carer will come to your home. They could simply just sit and chat with your loved one, escort them outdoors or on outings, or preparing food if needed.
