Cuddle-beds boost for hospice thanks to local firm Skerritts generosity

This week we celebrated the delivery of two large ‘cuddle-beds’ courtesy of local businessman Richard Skerritt and his company Skerritts Financial Planners, who provided the funds to purchase them.

Richard and Heidi Skerritt are valued long-term supporters of Martlets. In July of this year, committed to funding not one but two cuddle-beds. Both beds were delivered to Martlets’ In Patient Unit last week. The cuddle-beds will help patients who are on our inpatient unit be as close to loved ones as they would be at home. This something standard clinical beds make difficult.

Ruth Tierney, Nurse Ward Manager at Martlets commented:

“I can’t begin to express what a difference these beds will make. We are so grateful to Skerritts for their amazing generosity. The tears of joy when our team heard they were arriving were not just mine!

What a marvellous Christmas present these beds will be. They will allow loved ones to be as close to the person needing care as they would be in their own homes. This kind of intimacy and normality can make all the difference. It will help the well-being of both people, bringing comfort and very personal space at difficult times.”

Richard Skerritt said:

“We are all delighted to be able to make this donation of these wonderful cuddle-beds to Martlets. We know just what benefit they will bring people wanting to be close to their loved ones. The care that Martlets gives is inspiring. We’re proud to enable them be one of very few hospices in the UK that have these beds and to support them in making a positive difference to local people and their families.”

Emma Knight, Martlets Head of Partnerships commented:

“This donation of two cuddle-beds will be transformative for patients and their loved ones. It is another example of the fantastic support that Richard and Heidi and their team have given Martlets over the years. They have worked so closely in partnership with us to understand the needs of local people under our care and to help change lives. They really have become part of #TeamMartlets. We thank them all so much for their support.”

Martlets care is free to people who are over 18 and live in Brighton and Hove, the Deans or the Havens. As a charity, Martlets is only partially funded by the NHS and relies upon the generosity of the local community to keep hospice services running.

The support of companies such as Skerritts is invaluable. It is an important way that organisations can give back to their community while developing a rewarding partnership with Martlets that inspires employees and changes the lives of local people living with life-limiting illnesses.
