Freemasons Give Generously to Martlets this Christmas

Christmas is a little bit brighter at Martlets thanks to Sussex Masonic Charities and the Masonic Charitable Foundation. We have received a £2,000 donation from Sussex Masonic Charities and a £1,985 grant from the Masonic Charitable Foundation (MCF).

The freemasons Christmas donations will be used to help Martlets provide hospice care and support. It will help patients and their families across Brighton and Hove.

Grahame Carr, Trustee of Sussex Masonic Charities visited Martlets and said:

“I’m delighted that we’ve been able to assist Martlets as part of our work supporting Sussex communities. They do an outstanding job helping people with terminal or life limiting conditions, as well as supporting their families through very difficult times.”

Karen Taylor, Director of Clinical Services at Martlets, welcomed Grahame to Martlets and said,

“We really appreciate the generous and long-standing support of Freemasons.  We are a charity and only a third of our funding comes from the NHS. So we rely on the generosity of local organisations and fundraisers to help us continue to provide free life-changing hospice care for people in our community.

“In 2018-19, we helped more than 2,700 local people live life to the full and make the most of precious time with loved ones. We simply would not be able to achieve this without additional support like these donations from Freemasons.”

The MCF grant to Martlets is one of 218 grants made by Freemasons to hospices around the country. In total £750,000 will be donated to hospices all over England and Wales this year. This donation includes £300,000 which will be shared by each hospice that receives less than 60 per cent funding from the NHS.  A further £450,000 will be provided to individual hospices across England and Wales via Hospice UK, the national charity for hospice care.

MCF is partnering with Hospice UK to widening access and address barriers to local hospice services for local people who are homeless or have learning disabilities. Contributions to hospices from Freemasons have exceeded £13 million in England and Wales since 1984.
