Martlets shops get fit for the future

Today, Martlets Hospice has announced changes to their retail operation.

The much-loved local charity has ambitious plans for its retail business so that their shops can generate as much money as possible for the hospice care. To achieve this, the retail business needs to grow and be more profitable. The plans include extending trading hours across the 8 existing shops, investing in refurbishments, and developing its central warehouse in Hove so stock handling is more efficient.

The charity is also actively looking for a new shop in the Western Road area of Brighton & Hove to replace the shop that closed recently and hopes to open more shops in the future.

The changes do mean a restructure within the staff team and some job roles will be made redundant. However, the charity is creating 23 new jobs, both full time and part time, which it hopes will provide exciting new opportunities. All staff will be given the chance to apply for the new roles before they are offered to the external job market. No volunteer posts have been affected.

“For Martlets, this is a real opportunity to grow our retail operation. We know we can be more efficient so that we can raise more money to support more patients and their families. We’ve been consulting closely with all our staff to minimise redundancies, and I’m hopeful that many staff will apply for the new roles.

As well as providing new opportunities for our staff, they will also see an increase in pay. We are delighted that this new structure ensures all staff within our retail operation will be paid above the Brighton Living wage.

I do want to emphasise that none of our hospice care services are at risk and there will be no changes to the care we provide to the local community. Our plan is to increase our hospice care services, so we can care for more people living through a terminal illness, whenever and wherever it’s needed. We need to ensure that Martlets is fit for the future and is sustainable. Developing our retail operation is one of the ways that we can make this vision a reality.”
