Charlotte Brown, Shop Manager, tells us more about Plastic-free July at our London Road Shop.
“Here at Martlets’ London Road store, we are on a sustainability mission. We have pledged to go plastic-free for July by replacing second-hand plastic carrier bags with a re-usable and eco-friendly alternative. Cotton tote bags will be available to customers for a small donation. All the profits made form our initiative will go directly to Martlets, helping to save the planet and care for our local community.
Within Plastic-free July falls ‘National Plastic-Bag-Free Day’ on 3 July. This serves as a global reminder to address the issue of plastic bag pollution and encourage sustainable alternatives. It is estimated that approximately 500 billion plastic bags are used on a global scale, and those plastic bags remain in the world for anywhere from 100–500 years before finally decaying completely. This has a profound impact upon our environment as a result.
Within Martlets Trading, we are taking steps to a more sustainable future. Last year we stopped sourcing our Martlets-branded plastic bags and switched to the alternative of second-hand carrier bags which we receive donations in.

This July, we are asking you to join us on our sustainability mission and to bring your own bag when shopping with us. If you do need a bag, please donate what you can for one of our second-hand tote bags. Why not use that same tote bag to donate any unwanted items?
As the manager of multiple Martlets stores, I see the consumption and waste of plastic which is still incredibly prominent in the charity retail sector. The theme for this year’s Plastic-Free July campaign is ‘Small steps- Big difference’. I hope that our initiative will encourage others to get involved.”
