Retail and trading
We have several charity shops across the region - in Brighton, Hove, Peacehaven and Woodingdean. They play an important role in helping us raise funds.
If you love vintage, have a passion for fashion and enjoy serving customers then our shops are the place to be. Each is unique, and they all have lovely friendly teams!
Events and fundraising
There are lots of opportunities to volunteer at our events, or with our fundraising team. We run lots of events throughout the year. If you like meeting new people, are happy to shake a bucket, cheer loudly and get stuck in, then our fundraising team would love you to join them.
Our events are spread throughout the year. You can help out at just one, or all of them. It's flexible and completely up to you.
If events aren't right for you, we still need your help. Whether it's collecting collection boxes or volunteering in our office. There are plenty of ways to get involved.
Hospice
Our hospice-based volunteers are integral to the functioning of the hospice and the care of our patients. They help us welcome visitors, support our nurses, run wellbeing groups and more.
Their commitment to their roles and the ongoing service provided by the hospice is inspirational. And of course, of vital importance to our patients and their families.

Frequently asked questions
Frequently asked questions
Got questions about volunteering? Heres some of the most commonTo ensure the safety of our patients, staff and volunteers, we carry out certain checks such as getting references for people applying to volunteer with us. Don’t worry if this is your first job or volunteering opportunity, a reference could be from a teacher, colleague or neighbour. If you’re not sure who to put as a referee, you can contact our People Services Team for further help.
Martlets ask all applicants to let us know if you have any unspent convictions so we can consider whether this is relevant to your volunteering. Disclosing a conviction will not necessarily exclude you from becoming a Martlets volunteer, however we may discuss this with you before you begin volunteering. If you are applying for a role that meets any criteria as outlined in Rehabilitation of Offenders Act (ROA) 1974 (Exceptions) Order 1975, you will be required to undertake a standard or enhanced DBS check. If a DBS check is required, it will be indicated on our role descriptions. DBS checks for volunteers are free of charge and our People Services Team will help you complete them.
We recognise if you have been recently bereaved you may want to help support people going through a similar experience. For your own wellbeing we would recommend that you do not volunteer within the Hospice for at least 12 months following a bereavement. We have plenty of other opportunities available, including helping in our shops and distribution centre.
Yes, we can reimburse reasonable travel expenses to help you access our volunteering roles. This could be a local bus/train fare or petrol costs. If you would like to claim travel expenses, your volunteer manager or supervisor will be able to help you with the process.
For roles in our hospice, volunteers must be over 17 years old. For roles in our shops or retail distribution centre, volunteers must be over 16 years old. Unfortunately, we are unable to support students under the age of 16 taking part in the Duke of Edinburgh award.
If you are interested in a retail role, we encourage people to pop into their local shop and say hello to our friendly team of staff and volunteers. They will be able to tell you more about volunteering at Martlets, what’s involved in the role and offer you the chance to get hands on via one of our taster sessions.
If you are a citizen of the EU, EEA or Switzerland, you are free to volunteer your time for Martlets. If you are from outside of these areas and require a visa to visit, study or work in the UK you must check that you do not have restrictions on your visa precluding from volunteering in the UK. To check your volunteering doesn’t breach conditions of your visa we recommend that you contact UK Visas and Immigration. Please note that Martlets is unable to sponsor visa applications.
We know that life can be busy, and that different people will have different amounts of time they can spare. We have a wide range of roles to try and suit everyone, whether you can give 4 hours every week, or just now and again. Our role descriptions will indicate the usual time expectations for each role, however where possible, we try to be flexible to suit your availability.
Of course. We understand that sometimes a volunteer role might be different to how you expected it to be. If this is the case, you can speak to your volunteer manager who will help you find a role that you find both enjoyable and rewarding.
Yes! Lots of our volunteers help in more than one area of our organisation. If you are interested in volunteering in multiple roles, let us know when you apply, and we will be more than happy to find you your perfect roles at Martlets.
If you don’t feel ready to take on more than one role now, you can let us know at any time during your volunteering.
No, volunteering won’t affect your benefits. However whilst volunteering you must continue to meet the conditions of the benefit(s) you receive. If you are unsure about volunteering and your benefits, we would advise contacting your local job centre or council for further advice.
