Summary
Martlets is joining a coalition of hospices looking to ensure hospice services are available for years to come.
With the number of annual deaths in the UK expected to rise by 130,000 by 2040, Martlets, based in Hove is joining a coalition of hospices looking to ensure hospice services are available for years to come.
“This is Hospice Care” – a campaign led by Hospice UK – has already captured hearts and minds through a powerful TV advert based on real life hospice stories. The goal is to encourage people to consider leaving a gift in their Will to support their local hospice, ensuring that these essential services can continue to provide compassionate and specialist care for future generations.
Becki Jupp, Deputy CEO of Martlets, explains why we it’s crucial to plan ahead: “By 2040, the number of annual deaths in the UK is expected to rise by 130,000, with 90% due to natural causes—these are the people who could benefit from the care hospices provide. If we don’t start planning now, the gap in hospice care could become very real.
“As a charity, we are heavily reliant on generous donations from the public. This is why we’re urging people to consider leaving a gift in their Will to ensure we can continue to support our community in the years to come.”
Gifts in Wills are vital
These gifts already amount to a fifth of Martlets’ income and play a pivotal role in ensuring the team can continue to provide the hospice care that is desperately needed. As future needs grow, so too must the support they receive.
Paula has left a gift in her Will to Martlets in gratitude for the support she and her late son Gordon received. Gordon was diagnosed with motor neurone disease in 2018 and sadly died in 2020. Shortly after his diagnosis, he was referred to the hospice, where he was given equipment to aid his mobility. He also benefited from specialist care provided by physiotherapists, nurses and doctors. There was additional spiritual support provided too.
Gifts in Wills are greatly needed, and Paula has expressed why she chose to leave a gift saying: “Being able to leave something in my Will to the hospice makes me feel very proud. I care about my community and would like my gift to be used to make someone’s life easier, just as they helped my son and us as a family.”
