Five reasons you need a Will

Five reasons you need a Will

Arranging a Will gives you the peace of mind that your wishes will be followed after your death. Grant Phillips, Gifts in Wills and Grants Executive at Martlets tells us more.

When people talk about their death, they often want to make sure that the people they love will be cared for first. Yet according to research by unbiased in 2015, over half of people in the UK don’t have a Will.

Writing your Will is a simple process. We recommend you use the services of a solicitor or Will writer to ensure that complications don’t arise from a poorly drafted Will. You’ll need a list of your assets and liabilities so you can decide which gifts you leave.

Wills are also important to Martlets too. Many people when writing a Will, will leave a gift to a charity or cause they care about. Thanks to the generosity of local people, a third of our patients are cared for thanks to gifts in Wills. Leaving a gift in your Will to Martlets will help us to be there to support Brighton and Hove families when they need it most.

People together writing a Will

If you’re still not convinced, here are five reasons you need a Will:

1. Make your wishes known

Keeping your Will up to date gives you peace of mind that the people and causes that matter to you will be looked after in the way that you want.

2. Help your family and friends

If you’ve made a Will your family and friends will know that they are acting on your wishes. It’ll help them to take care of your estate.

3. Protect your partner’s rights

If you’re not married or in a civil partnership, the only way to make sure your partner is looked after is by including them in your Will.

4. Give your assets to the people and causes you care about

Without a Will that sets out your wishes, what happens to your estate when you die will be decided by law. If you’ve written your Will, you keep control.

5. Minimise inheritance tax

Having a Will may reduce the amount of inheritance tax that needs to be paid on your estate.
