For over 26 years we’ve helped thousands of people across Brighton & Hove, the Havens and Deans through dying, death and bereavement with our specialist, expert care. At Martlets, we know the value of being honest and standing alongside people during the toughest of times and we’re proud of our reputation for care in the communities we serve.
This is why we’re writing to you all to ask you to stand with us now.
We’re two months away from re-opening our Hospice home and we cannot wait to share this newly updated building with you. It’s been expertly designed to ensure we can provide the very best care and comfort to patients, their families, and friends. It’s work that we needed to do before COVID hit, and the pandemic underlined just how vital the right healthcare environment is to assure safe, dignified care for people experiencing terminal illness.
We know that the cost-of-living crisis has impacted all of you across our community.
But the truth is, it has hit us hard too. From heating our patient rooms, to keeping our community nurses on the road, at every turn we are feeling the impact.
This is why we’re asking for your support to help us finish this build and to Keep Martlets Caring – now and into the future.
We recognise it is a challenging time for us all. But anything you can do today will help us make a difference for generations to come.
Our ambassador, Norman Cook, is alongside us, helping us finish this build Right Here, Right Now and his heartfelt postcards have been landing on doormats across the city. You can read his personal message to you below.
And there’s a host of other ways you can help us keep caring too.
If you have previously raised money for us, we’d love you to consider us again. Every donation you make, every event you hold for us – they all add up to making sure that Martlets holds a very special place in our community.
We’re only a few weeks away from bringing the magic and colour of our brilliant Shaun by the Sea fundraising art trail which hits the streets in September. Join the trail and donate or if you’re more daring, you could sign up and be sponsored to tackle our i360 Shear Drop this autumn.
Or you could donate items or make a purchase in one of our nine shops across the city or through our online stores.
We are only able to do what we do because of you and your support over the past two decades. It is thanks to you we are so close to finishing the update of our incredible Hospice home in our community.
I’d like to share some words with you from Paula. She’s volunteered with us for over 15 years and we had the privilege of caring for her son Gordon until he died in 2020.
“People never think it will happen to them or their family. You think ‘my life is cozy’ and that this stuff happens to someone else; you feel sorry for the ‘other people’ it affects, until it touches your life and your family. The reality is a terminal illness can happen to you, or someone you love, in an instant, at any time.“
That’s when Martlets will step in and somehow make an awful situation more manageable. They will remind you that life is there for living right until the very end. They will take the time to find out what matters most to you and those you love and put that at the heart of the care they provide. And the new building and facilities will ensure this incredible level of care is accessible for decades to come.”
Please stand with us and help Keep Martlets Caring now and into the future.
Yours sincerely,
Claire Irving
